                                            A Trip to the Movies

A trip to the movies is being organised for the Year 9s and 10s at Tamaki College.

The costs involved are:
Hire of the movie theatre                                   $500
Cost of Transport for each student                            $3.80
Cost of a snack (popcorn, drink or ice cream)     $4
Cost of a combo (all three of popcorn, drink & ice cream) $10

It is expected that

  • 1/3 of the students attending will have a combo. and
  • 15% of the students attending will have one snack

There are 114 Year 9 students and 96 Year 10 students at Tamaki College.
The school has stated that at least 60 students must attend for the trip to go ahead.

Investigate the cost of this trip, per student, if 60 or more students attend the trip.

Show full working, explain what you are doing at each step and round your answers sensibly. State any assumptions made.
Your overall grade will depend on the clarity of your thinking and calculations.

Hints:
  1. What would the total cost of the transport?
  2. How many students will be expected to buy a snack?
  3. How many students are expected to buy a combo?
  4. What is the total cost if 60 students attend?
  5. How much does the school have to charge each student if only 60 students attend?

Answer
What would the total cost of the transport?
3.80 x 60 = 228 + 500 = 728
228 + 500 = $728
How many students will be expecting to buy a snack?
15% of 60 = 9 x 4 = 36
9
How many students are expected to buy a combo?
⅓ of 60 = 20 x 10 = 200
20
What is the total cost if 60 students attend?
728 + 36 + 200
$964
How much does the school have to charge each student if only 60 students attend?
60 x ☐ = 964
60 x 16.10 = 966

The answer I got was $16.10 that each student will have to pay and there will be $2 left to spend
