How parliaments make laws

Why we need laws
Laws protect us and our environment. Parliament and the community o NZ has been considering a lot of laws. Making laws take a lot of steps and debates. As citizens we respect the laws because they are clearly communicated and fairly enforced. Everyone is held accountable to the same laws, and those laws protect our fundamental rights.

How parliament make laws
First the bill is considered by the first reading which is the first opportunity for the house to debate. Next is the select committee who have six months to listen and observe the public and the useful evidence. Then the next step is second reading which is the main debate for the house and for it to be defeated. After that is the committee of the whole house who make further amendments. After that is the third reading is the last debate. Finally is the royal assent which is when the queen signs the bill and officially becomes a law of NZ or a act of parliament.
